Less and less of the middle school and high school students that I tutor in Atlanta know their multiplication tables. These students wonder "what's the big deal", I have a calculator!
Well what is the big deal? Do they really need to know their multiplication tables? After all, some teachers let you use your calculator when taking a test. And if you are a cashier the cash register figures everything out for you. If you become a basketball star, football star or Rapper someone else handles your finances.
The big deal is multiplication is essential for passing Algebra. And every child has to take pre-algbra, algebra 1 and algebra 2 to graduate from high school. The big deal is multiplication is a part of our everday living. If you are cooking a meal and the recipe serves 4 but you are having 8 guest knowing your multiplication will help you. If you are getting a car loan, renting an apartment or buying a house knowing your multiplication will help you. If there is a sale at the mall, online or even at the grocery store knowing your multiplication will help you.
Not knowing your multiplication tables is not acceptable. We as parents, mentors, teachers, tutors, and adults in society have to step up and take responsibility for teaching our children the importance of multiplication to them. We have to make learning relevant to them. We have to make learning fun and cool. We have to make learning important.
If we don't we could end up with a lot of kids who grow up to be adults that come up short
That's my 2 cents.
